Johnny Cash - Ain’t No Grave
The sad truth is that in today’s day and age every type of music has to be categorized into a genre. Nothing can be itself without being labeled, whether it’s rock, pop, indie, dance, or what have you. Personally, I’m not a big fan of country. Sure, there will be song every once in a blue moon that catches my fancy, but I don’t intend on buying a Lady Antebellum album any time soon.
Nonetheless, I love Johnny Cash, his music, and what he stood for. Though he is often labeled as “country” I don’t think he will ever be definitively categorized. He was a preacher of sorts, more religious than Dylan, but also more philosophically deep. He embodied America’s soul in his, capturing the hearts of generations. His music is his music, and nothing more.
Today, February 26th, is his birthday. R.I.P., Man in Black.
