Happy Birthday, Mr. Glass
Well, it appears one great’s birthday follows another’s. Classical composer (and former taxi driver) Philip Glass turned 75 today, and in celebration “Symphony No. 9,” his latest work, was premiered at Carnegie Hall. The three-movement piece is already the number one album in the iTunes “Classical” section, and you can buy it here.
Interestingly enough, a superstitious belief exists known as the curse of the ninth, which states that classical composers die after completing their ninth symphony, or before finishing their tenth. Earlier today on Soundcheck, though Glass claimed he was not superstitious, said the following about finishing his ninth symphony:
I solved it this way: I finished number nine, and I immediately began to write number ten, and by a month later I had completed number ten. Well, not completely completed because I still had some editing to do and so on and so forth…
Godspeed, Mr. Glass. May you make it to your 76th.
