Like Stanley Kubrick, it appears Ansel Adams at some point dabbled in street photography. From Flavorwire:
In the ’40s, Fortune Magazine sent [Ansel Adams] to document Los Angeles’ aviation industry. He shot workers at a steel plant, but also dawdled around LA a bit, snapping oil rigs and boulevards and friends at bowling tournaments, friends at bars, friends staring off at the Santa Monica coastline. He ultimately decided that “none of the pictures were very good,” and donated the photos to the Los Angeles Public Library.
Though the photos aren’t as breath-taking as Adams’ work with landscapes the majority of them are still, contrary to his claim, very good pictures. They will also be featured at an exhibit entitled Ansel Adams Los Angeles at the drkrm Gallery in LA, starting February 18th. However, if you’re not going to be in California any time soon (like me), you can view all of Adams’ shots on the LA Public Library’s website.
