A letter of note for aspiring editors
The site Letters of Note recently posted a funny tidbit about great American writer and editor H. L. Mencken. Apparently then rookie novelist William Saroyan had hopes of being a magazine editor, and looked to Mencken for advice. This was the tactful letter he received:

San Fransisco, California
Dear Saroyan,
I note what you say about your aspiration to edit a magazine. I am sending you by this mail a six-chambered revolver. Load it and fire every one into your head. You will thank me after you get to hell and learn from other editors there how dreadful their job was on earth.

I mean, I’ve been discouraged from pursuing a career as a writer, but…
