Some scientists from the UK recently filmed what are thought to be new species of sea life in an area of the Indian Ocean once thought inhospitable. The video itself is silent and slightly boring, but towards the end a plethora of sea life emerges, and what I thought was a rock quickly turns out to be a pile of (at least what appears to be) crayfish. From The Telegraph:
The images were recorded using a remote-operated, underwater robot called Kiel 6000, which allowed scientists to survey volcanic underwater vents in the South West Indian Ridge in the Indian Ocean.
Scientists from Southampton University filmed a variety of creatures including yeti crabs, scaly-foot snails and sea cucumbers, some of which may be new species as they are not found in neighbouring Atlantic and Central Indian Ocean ridge systems.
The Telegraph’s article also includes several less blurry photos of the newly discovered species, such as a white-haired crustacean called the “Yeti Crab.”
